Sweeney, Cahill lead A's past O's

Baseball Betting Lines

07/01/2010 - Baltimore, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ryan Sweeney went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as Oakland took an 8-1 win over Baltimore in the rubber match at Camden Yards.

Jack Cust had two hits, scored twice and drove in two while Cliff Pennington went 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Athletics, who have won five of their last six.

Trevor Cahill (8-2) won his seventh straight decision as he went seven innings and was charged with just one run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He has not lost since May 16, a run of nine starts.

Nick Markakis drove in the lone run, while Jake Arrieta (2-2) was roughed up for four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six innings of work for the Orioles, who had won five of six coming in.

Baltimore jumped on top in the first inning as Corey Patterson led off with a double, moved to third on Miguel Tejada's groundout and crossed the plate on Markakis' sac fly.

Oakland, though, answered with a three-run second. Sweeney hit a one-out single and came home when Cust followed with a double. After Mark Ellis walked, Gabe Gross hit into a fielder's choice that saw Ellis forced out at second. Pennington then tagged a double to left that chased home both runners for a 3-1 lead.

The A's added a run in the fifth for a 4-1 advantage. Daric Barton led off with a single and was replaced on base by Adam Rosales, who moved to second when Ty Wigginton missed a pickoff throw. Rosales later scored on a Sweeney single.

In the sixth Baltimore got a leadoff single from Patterson and he stole second after Tejada flied out. However, Markakis struck out and Wigginton grounded out to end the inning.

The A's plated four more runners in the seventh to solidify their lead. With men on first and second, Sweeney drove in one with a single, and Cust chased home another with a ground-rule double. Ellis followed with an RBI single and, after Matt Albers took over on the mound, Gross knocked an RBI single to left for an 8-1 lead.

Game Notes

Before the game, the Orioles placed outifelder Luke Scott on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
